You should be careful when approaching this tactic in order to avoid link farms or other bad quality website directories. These sites will be penalized or banned from Google and they may hurt your website.

2. Create a blog or write guest blog posts

Blogging is a popular form of content-based link building. You can either create your own blog or write useful blog posts for other blogs in your niche. Every time you write a guest post you may put a link back to your main website or blog. That is a great way to increase the traffic in your site but also to build back links.

3. Comment on blog posts

Many of you read a lot of blog posts per day. You should take advantage of that activity and start commenting the articles you read. That is a great way to build back links for your site but also to develop a web audience.

4. Write comments in forums

You can find a lot of forums, which are related to your niche and start participating in some of the threads that you are interested in. Don't forget to create a signature and put a link back to your main website or blog. Every time you comment a thread, be sure to add useful and helpful information for the people who visit the forum.

Article directory submission sites are sites such as EzineArticles or GoArticles where you can create a profile and start submitting good quality articles with valuable content. 6. Use social bookmarking sites

Social bookmarks are sites such as Digg, Delicious, Stumbleupon, reddit, Fark or Slashdot. Submitting a url in social bookmarks is a great way to increase your back links (varied back links such as no follows, followed and contextual links).
