I read an article recently by a fellow blogger. He had a rather convincing rant about how SEO is stupid. His point is simply that if you are honestly GOOD at what it is you do (ie blogging) then your content will rank all by itself. So, basically if you are good at what you do, then there is no reason to waste your time on SEO.

This is my reply:

I have a friend that thinks similarly to you. I am glad people like you are out there, I know I will never need to compete with you for the top spot on Google. rather than show up and play you're just sitting on the sidelines waiting for everyone to see how great you really are.

Think of it this way... Many people would argue that Macintosh is the best computer and that OSX is the BEST operating system in the world. If your theory is true, then OSX can NOT be the best because it ranks so poorly. Windows is still on top. not because it is the best, simply because they convinced everyone else they are the best.

SEO is not about BEING the best, its about convincing everyone to believe that you are. As long as everyone believes you are the best, then you are. Not because there is no one better than you, but because no one is looking for someone better...

Make sense?

It wasn't until recently that Apple realized they needed to do more than just make good products. You have to make sure people know you exist. And then you get your raving fan customers. They will help push the word out that you are really good. After that your customer base grows until you are an up and coming contender.

This is the same thing as SEO. Get your name out there however you have to. Then your quality product will stand up on its own merits, and it goes from there.

So while you claim to have good content and no one is reading it. ill keep pushing my mediocre content to the first page of Google with clever marketing and SEO tactics.

Disclaimer: I think my content is good and that everyone needs to read what I have to say. I offset this with good SEO, and clever marketing. This combination has taken me to the top of Google very quickly. So while my fellow blogger friend is still not even ranked on Alexa, Ill keep my spot right were it is.
