Understanding Online Search Engine Optimization

SEO Articles

It's not a secret these days that if you want to have a successful small business that you must have a website. Your current customers expect you to have an online presence and it's also the best place for you to find new customers as well.

However, just having a website isn't enough to get you customers. You have to use online search engine optimization (SEO) techniques so that people can find your website.

The goal of this technique is to get your website ranked at the top of the search engines. In the past, people looked to their phone book when they needed to find a new company to handle something for them. Now, they look to Google, or one of the other search directories.

The goal of online SEO techniques is that when someone goes to Google, Yahoo or Bing to search for something they need, your business is the listing that shows up at the top of the page.

Online SEO Techniques

There are two techniques that must both be used in order to get your page to the top spots in the search engines. You must focus on both on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

On Page

The goal of your on-page SEO is to convince the search engines that your page is a real authority on the keyword. In order to do this, you have to focus on placing your keywords in the places that Google expects to see it. This includes the title, meta tags and frequently throughout the content. However, it's also important that your usage of the keywords looks natural.

In the past, many people were guilty of "keyword stuffing". This is the act of adding the keyword into the content on the page so many times that it doesn't really make sense. This was done to try to fool the search engines and make them think the page was more relevant so it would get ranked higher.

Over the last year or so, Google has begun to lower sites that have a keyword density that is too high. For this reason, you should do research or consult a professional before you write the copy for a web page to ensure your keyword density is the right amount.

Off Page

The other part of online search engine optimization relates to "off page" factors. This includes the other sites online that link to your site. Each incoming link counts as a type of vote to the search engines. The more votes you get, and the better the quality of those votes, the higher your site will rank in the searches.

Getting links can be tricky though. The high quality links are much harder to get, but they have more value to the search engines. Lower quality of links don't have as much value, but they are much easier to attain.

The online search engine optimization strategy for your business should include both on-page and off-page SEO as well as a variety of incoming links.

Summary

Correct usage of online search engine optimization techniques can be the key to the future of your business.
