If you are anything like me or the millions of others on the Web trying to get your website to rank higher than a 3/10, you will have realized just like the rest of us that this is no easy task. You may have read numerous articles and books on how to improve your status on the web, but still not sure where to start. While there are many different strategies to improve your ranking, we are going to cover one aspect of search engine optimization. It's called "Link Relevancy". As you probably know by now, "backlinks" are an important factor in getting your website noticed by search engine crawlers. Well, what if I told you that what you name your links and how they relate to your website/article also plays a big role with search engines when determining rankings.
As search engines develop into a more sophisticated system, they have started to recognize more metrics for determining rankings. Link relevancy is one of the new identifying factors. With link relevancy, popularity of the link is not a factor. As you probably know, the more popular the page or domain, the more likely it is to rank at the top. Now I am not saying you should forget about domain and page popularity when creating your "backlinks", just keep in mind what I am about to tell you as well.
This is how link relevancy works: if I were to link my web design site to an article about how obsolete the "Yellow Pages" books have become, emphasizing the ever growing web presence that is taking over our old fashioned ways for locating business listings, it would be considered relevant. Let's face it, finding a business or individual is an easy mouse click, or smart phone away. Now I get to choose the link name. Instead of choosing something like "click here" or "learn more", I am better off using a name like "Yellow Pages Are Obsolete: Why you need a website", or "This is why you need a website".
These descriptions are quite neutral and created by real people. This metric, is a factor that helps make up the relevancy indicators online. The search engine will also pick up on the fact that I linked to an article about the increasing online searches for businesses from a site about web design to increase their understanding of relevancy. This human-powered information is essential to modern-day search engines.
