For those who are new to SEO (and for those who are not familiar with Internet languages) this resource might give some useful insight for you.
On-page SEO
On-page SEO refers to search engine optimization strategy that is done on the website itself. In other words, these are the tasks (e.g. tweaking, enhancement, modification) you perform on your website's pages so that it becomes more search engine friendly. When done effectively, your pages become highly index-able or crawl-able by search engine spiders and therefore will give your website an increased visibility on SERPs. Thus, it gives better traffic (visits) for your website from people in your chosen niche.
As part of on-page optimization strategy, you can perform the following:
- Title and meta optimization - if you check Google's SEO guidelines, you will notice that it gives so much weight on page title and description. As an SEO, title and meta optimization is something that should not be overlooked. Usually, search engines like Google better understand what your page is all about when you have these elements. If you perform a search on Google, the title and the snippets you see in the search results are usually gathered by search engine spiders from pages' title tags and meta descriptions.
- Establish your target keywords and use them to optimize your page content - a lot of websites do not rank simply because of wrong target keywords. To do that, it is imperative that you understand your goals - what is your purpose why you are establishing a site? From your established goal, do a research (there are a number of free keyword tools to choose from) to find golden keywords that best represent your goals and use them to optimize your web content.
- Other effective on-page optimization techniques include: a) optimizing images by adding alt text (b) internal linking (e.g. certain elements on your website's home page can be linked to inner pages that provide more info about them) - your web pages should be cohesively-tailored internally (c) fixing common errors in the back-end (e.g. 404 errors or dead links, loading problem, etc.)
Off-page SEO
Off-page SEO on the other hand is done outside your site. This covers 2 major areas:
- Back links (links that point to your website) - an SEO strategy wherein you are working to build links that point to your site in the content network (from the web). If your website has more quality back links, it is more likely given greater weight by search engines than a site with poor and lesser number of back links. Ethical off-page SEO strategy helps increase your website's presence on SERPs and therefore increase your site's traffic.
- Social media engagement - the rise of social media platforms in the recent years pushed search engines giants like Google to modify their criteria/algorithm for search ranking - the inclusion of social media factor. This is the reason why the links posted on social networks are index-able. How many people like your websites in the social media world? That's the question to reflect on.
While on-page and off-page are different approaches to search engine optimization, both are essential for your website to increase its likelihood of landing on top of search engine results page.
