Most website owners understand that it is important that a website avoid being down in the valley depths of search engine page rankings; many owners can be found searching for a means to rise to the pinnacle of SEO success. This is certainly a goal that should be the primary one in any internet marketing campaign.
The main purpose of Search Engine Optimization is for a website to appear highest in the search engines and directories by means of changes to make a website more search engine compatible. What this means is that a website must be constructed to encourage and allow search engine spiders to browse or crawl it to be included in search listings. Compatibility has a great deal to do with the technology used for website construction. A little known fact is that the internet 'spiders' are incompatible with many web technologies including frames, JavaScript and Flash, to name just a few.
This is just one of many things that affect search engine rankings. Learning some tips to improve this ranking and putting them to work for a website would be like climbing Mt. Everest in an elevator.
Here are some of the more substantial tips to help a website obtain high page ranking in search engine results:
- Research Keywords - The best keywords are those used frequently in searches that do not face a lot of competition from other websites. Google's Keyword Tool can help with this determination. It is not of much value to have a keyword that is never used as part of a search phrase.
- Results Usage - Whatever keyword phrases are used must be employed effectively. They should go in the correct locations such as the page title, headings, links, etc. Be concerned with density issues as too much usage could create a negative user experience. Users make purchases, not search engines.
- Optimize - The focus here is to make a website searcher friendly. Per Google, if focused on the user, all else will follow. Concentrate on a targeted audience, not the search engines. In the same breath, a website must also be friendly to the spiders that will read it by following some best practices such as search-friendly URLs, adding text to images, and clear navigation to name a few. By all means, design for the computer programs and searchers; just don't forget the targeted audience in the process.
- Links - Links on a website do two things: help the spiders find the site and give it greater visibility in the search results. This has to do with the concept of building credible and valuable links back to a website. Don't forget that the quantity of the links is not the primary focus. The quality and click-through-rate of links are highly important. Spiders can tell if a link is or is not natural and those type of links are the only ones useful for website indexing and ranking.
- Accessible - Be sure that all pages to a website are accessible to the search engines. Check to be sure that the HTML code doesn't have any errors. HTML code lets the browser format web pages according to the desired appearance; if it contains errors, the browser may only search portions of a web page and perhaps mistakenly be led to believe that some of the text is HTML formatting information and not site content. The search engine will ignore such text and it will not be listed in the results page. Avoid this by using an HTML and CSS validator to check for this type of critical error.
- Competition - Check out competitors and see what they are doing. This is a seldom-used tip that is really one of the most important ones to practice. Research of a competitor's keywords can change the strategy of an SEM campaign. Check a competitor's links for a competitive keyword being used; their strategy may only consist of a few poorly written articles for a given keyword phrase. By creating more quality articles, the competition could be easily surpassed. It won't happen in every case, but it is easy to see what can be uncovered.
- Content - The name-of-the-game is quality content for web pages. Google spiders can gauge the way in which keywords are laid out and how content is formatted as well as if that content is being written for ranking or useful content. This is without a doubt one of the simplest tips that can be offered. Create quality content and the rest will follow.
Following the above tips and information can help increase the page ranking of a website. To complete the original analogy, an informed and educated website owner should be using SEO methodology and them ride the wave of page ranking to the peak of SEO success!
